Screening Blood and Water and Pushing for Water Rights
On Sunday, March 6th 2022, nonprofit organizations Indigenous & Muslim Connection (IME), in collaboration with Justice For All Canada, will feature a film about Indigenous Water Defenders at Wet'suwet'en. The online program features a documentary directed by Layla Black, a Mohawk member of Six Nations of the Grand River. The film’s plot explores Black’s journey in taking back her Cultural Identity while learning about her inherent responsibility as a Water Defender.
Three Mohawk members who were in Wet’suwet’en experiencing violent RCMP arrests in November 2021 will also be speaking at the screening:
Both Layla and Logan are third-generation Residential School Survivors. They were never previously arrested until confronted by two dozen armed RCMP who pinned Logan down. Thirty peaceful protestors, including journalists and praying Land Defenders, were arrested in Wet’suwet’in for “civil contempt”. Despite that traumatic event, Layla believes in non-violence, saying, “Stand in Love, take all the hate, and take all the Peace. Handcuffs are a sign of Resiliency.”
Zaineb Survery, founder of IME, will explain how Water Rights are local issues: “My hometown Mississauga has two water treatment plants, sells it to other cities, Pepsi-co and Coca-cola; yet the two neighbouring Reserves have water boil advisories.” Tickets are $10, and all proceeds go to sustain Wet’suwet’en Defenders and future Indigenous filmmaking projects. The public can register at www.MuslimIndigenous.com
Indigenous and Muslim Education (IME) is an organization that teaches the public on the common grounds of the two traditions from racism, colonial experiences, and traditions. The organization was established in July 2021 upon findings of the children’s mass unnamed graves in Tk’amloops.
Justice For All Canada is a leading human rights and advocacy group defending global Indigenous Muslim minorities.
