Picture

RENOWNED KASHMIRI ACTIVIST

Khurram Parvez is a globally recognized human rights defender, known for documenting rights violations, promoting civil society action, and democratic institution-building for Indigenous Kashmiris.

WHAT HAPPENED TO KHURRAM PARVEZ?

On November 22 2021, Khurram was illegally arrested and detained under India’s draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Since then, the United Nations, Justice For All Canada, and countless human rights organizations and experts have demanded his unconditional release.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT KHURRAM PARVEZ

WHO IS KHURRAM PARVEZ?
Born in 1977, Khurram works as a Program Coordinator at the Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCCS).
WHY IS THE JKCCCS SIGNIFICANT?
The JKCCCS is a critical – and only – civil liberties organization in Kashmir. Over the past 20 years, they have documented the impact of state torture, extrajudicial killings, and widespread abuse on thousands of Kashmiri individuals.
Why was Khurram detained?
In November 2021, Khurram was arrested by Indian authorities under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). According to the United Nations, this Indian government-enacted law is weaponized against anyone critical of the state’s human rights abuses. Khurram was an ardent supporter of Kashmiri protections and fundamental freedoms.
Where is Khurram now?
Khurram remains imprisoned in Delhi’s Rohini Jail. No charges have been filed, making his arrest arbitrary, illegal, and political. Justice For All Canada is concerned about thousands of cases of activists being held for years without recourse to the judicial process. Kashmiri and Indian activists detained under UAPA and the PSA are routinely denied access to lawyers and family. They are also at high risk of torture and ill-treatment.
