Justice For All Canada expresses outrage over the killings of over 50 Uighurs, including children, in last week’s building fire in the Tengritagh neighbourhood of Ürümqi. The victims could not escape due to invasive COVID policies that prevented people from accessing timely assistance.
“Our hearts break for the families and children killed in the horrific fire. Their deaths inevitably result from the Chinese communist government’s draconian COVID quarantines disproportionately impacting minorities. I denounce their blatant disregard for Uighur lives. We call on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to commemorate the victims, acknowledge these genocidal policies and accelerate humanitarian protection for vulnerable Uighurs," expressed Taha Ghayyur, Executive Director of Justice For All Canada.
According to audio and video reports emerging from the region, the trapped victims were pleading for authorities to open the doors. In one audio recording, a mother named Qemernisa Abdurahman described losing two children in the corridor due to heavy smoke while attempting to reach the emergency escape. After failing to unlock the emergency doors, Abdurahman and her children, Nehdiye and Imran, died in the building.

Emergency exits were welded shut after over 100 days of the Chinese government implementing an oppressive COVID lockdown called ‘not sustainable’ by the World Health Organization (WHO). The fire lasted three hours after firetrucks were obstructed by fencing surrounding the building.
Uyghur residents in both Ürümqi and East Turkestan have remained locked in their homes, leading to starvation, deaths, suicide and a lack of medical attention. The fire triggered public outcry in Urumqi, East Turkistan, and across China, with many Chinese-origin demonstrators expressing concern over the growing harms of China’s COVID policies.
Justice For All Canada demands accountability and justice for those Uighur lives sacrificed due to China’s impractical Zero COVID policies. Uighurs are already impacted by the ongoing genocide crimes against humanity facing their communities. Yet Uighurs continue to pay the price while the world watches without action.
