UN Delay - Uighur Human Rights Report Nowhere In Sight
May 9th, 2022
Justice For All Canada encourages the United Nations to expedite releasing their Uighur human rights report, especially as UN High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet prepares to visit East Turkestan (Xinjiang) this month.
The long-awaited OHCHR report promises to reveal the Chinese government’s human rights violations against Uighur minorities. The report also represents a critical action repeatedly requested by Justice For All Canada for unfettered access to the region.
In a March 2022 open letter, our Save Uighur campaign joined Human Rights Watch and 193 organizations in demanding Bachelet’s office end their silence in the face of grave violations facing Uighur Muslims in East Turkestan and globally.
This unprecedented UN visit to China must incorporate meetings with Uighur groups, internment camp survivors, refugees, including Uighurs directly impacted by the atrocities and China’s discriminatory policies targeting this minority. “The stories of affected Uighur Muslims must be told without interference or intimidation from Chinese authorities. Otherwise, the UN’s investigative efforts will lack credibility,” said Executive Director Taha Ghayyur.
This visit to China and East Turkestan must be transparent without control or manipulation from the Chinese government. Human rights activists in Canada call on Bachelet not to fail Uighur victims of the ongoing genocide.
Millions of Uighurs are still held in mass concentration camps as China’s communist regime attempts to erase Uighur existence and beliefs. The population is also forced into illegal labour programs, and reports of sexual violence and rape have been made by camp survivors.
Justice For All Canada urges the Canadian government to join activists calling for Bachelet to release the UN’s report soon. Canada and the United Nations can no longer ignore the genocidal crimes against humanity facing Uighur Muslims. Releasing this report is paramount to ensure legal action is taken to end the ongoing atrocities.
