Condemning IDF for Deliberately Targeting Humanitarian Infrastructure in Gaza
April 22nd, 2024
Justice For All Canada condemns in the strongest terms the deliberate targeting of a Canadian humanitarian watering truck in Gaza by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). This reprehensible act is consistent with recent strikes against World Central Kitchen convoys, resulting in the killing of staff and highlighting a pattern of disregard for humanitarian workers.
On April 17, staff from the International Development Relief Fund (IDRF) in Gaza were horrified to discover their water truck in a deliberate and obvious attack. Since the onslaught of Israel’s siege on Gaza, the number of humanitarian personnel targeted and killed is at least 224.
Their latest callousness portrays humanitarian workers and infrastructure as mere collateral damage in Occupied Palestine, devoid of value to the IDF's operations. In a region already subjected to relentless air raids, forced starvation and human rights abuses, depriving the population of essential resources like food and water is not only frustrating but also represents a strategy aimed at slowly eroding life. This calculated approach demands the urgent need for decisive international action to prevent what amounts to a clear manifestation of the genocide of the Palestinian people.
“In a so-called civilized world held together by international legal standards, the dystopian reality faced by thousands of Gazans relying on a few lifelines while being at constant risk for seeking basic necessities is deplorable and shocking,” said Taha Ghayyur, Executive Director of Justice For All Canada. “The lack of a substantial response from the Israeli government over this incident further proves their disregard for Palestinian life,” added Ghayyur.
Canada's response articulated by International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen acknowledges the gravity of attacks on humanitarian operations. However, it remains hollow without concrete sanctions against Israeli leaders responsible for indiscriminate bombardment destroying humanitarian infrastructure, including the killing of tens of thousands of Palestinians.
The sheer frequency of Israeli airstrikes since October 7th, 2023 not only normalizes violence against Palestinians but also emboldens IDF members to act with impunity.
Justice For All Canada calls upon the Canadian government to move beyond statements and take decisive action, particularly sanctions, to hold accountable Israeli officials responsible for these egregious violations of human rights and international law.
Canada cannot stand idly by while such atrocities continue unabated.
