Canada Boldly Steps Forward with Bill C-70 Against Foreign Interference
May 7th 2024
Justice For All Canada commends the government for its decisive action in addressing the reality of foreign interference in Canada by introducing Bill C-70, "An Act respecting countering foreign interference." This bill is a crucial step towards safeguarding Canada's democratic processes and protecting the rights of all Canadians, particularly vulnerable minority and diaspora communities.
Bill C-70 arrives amid India's election as Prime Minister Narendra Modi openly makes disturbing threats against foreigners—a shocking retaliation following credible accusations from Canadian officials that Modi’s BJP has sent agents abroad to target Canadians and other foreigners.
Our advocacy goals, previously shared with the Foreign Interference Commission, align closely with the measures outlined in Bill C-70. These measures focus on defending marginalized communities and addressing foreign interference in Canada. Additionally, our anti-racism work, which focuses on the transnational nature of global fascist ideologies seeping into Canada, aims to protect persecuted minorities and ensure their participation in democratic processes. We are optimistic that Bill C-70 will help attain our goals because it aims to enhance transparency, strengthen national security frameworks, and deter malicious foreign actors.
As highlighted in our standing decision within Canada's inquiry into foreign interference, Justice For All Canada wishes to protect the Indian diaspora community in Canada from potential harassment, violence, and retribution by foreign agents. Considering the recent CSIS intelligence assessment on Indian foreign interference, Canada's government must implement these protections, especially in light of documented attempts to compromise Canadian democratic processes.
Justice For All Canada continues calling for international cooperation to combat right-wing ideology and interference by foreign entities. Aligning with the measures proposed in Bill C-70, we urge the government to collaborate with allies to address the global reach of such interference and ensure a collective defence of human rights and democratic values in Canada.
As outlined in Bill C-70, Justice For All Canada endorses the following recommendations to the Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs, urging collaboration with international partners and stakeholders to address foreign interference effectively;
As Canada's inquiry into foreign interference progresses, Justice For All Canada reaffirms its commitment to actively contribute to policy discussions and advocate for the rights of minority communities affected by interference from India, China, and other foreign entities.
