Since the election of the current ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), authorities have applied increasingly restrictive measures toward journalists and media outlets. India's ranking on the World Press Freedom Index dropped from 150 to 161 since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office under the BJP. Reporters Without Borders warns that press freedom in India is facing a crisis, with violence against journalists and politically partisan media contributing to censorship and human rights violations.
