Human Rights Report Calls for Canadian Government Action to Ban Forced Labour Goods
October 1st, 2023
Justice for All Canada has released a groundbreaking report with research from the University of Toronto’s Centre For Ethics, "Uncovering Slave Labour in Google’s Supply Chain," a strong exposé of the technology giant complicity in Chinese state abuses against Uyghur Muslims in East Turkestan (Xinjiang).
This report reveals how much like other tech giants, Google's supply chain has been tainted by forced Uyghur labour in East Turkestan. Unlike Apple, which publicly discloses its supplier list, Google's secrecy has allowed it to escape public scrutiny. The report dissects auditing processes and stark disparities between external audits and internal findings. It also underlines the pressing need for concrete action to eradicate forced labour from global supply chains.
"Our investigation exposes the distressing reality of Google's complicity in the suffering of Uyghur Muslims, highlighting the corporation's opacity and evasion of responsibility," says Taha Ghayyur, Executive Director of Justice for All Canada.
The Uyghur population in East Turkestan is facing an ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity, with credible, documented forced labour as a significant element of their experience. This issue becomes exacerbated by global companies like Google, whose supply chain practices make it challenging to hold them accountable for their involvement in these atrocities.
The report presents numerous recommendations to the Canadian government, including imposing a blanket ban on forced labour goods entering Canada, aligning with international efforts to combat this grave human rights violation. It also calls for ethical business practices and the support of Bill S-211 (Fighting Against Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act) to make it mandatory for companies to prove their products are not produced using forced labour.
