Today, Canadian Muslims join hands with impacted Palestinians in a powerful act of solidarity fasting. Organized by Justice for All Canada, this global day of fasting is a testament to our commitment to ending the senseless killings and bloodshed arising from the 13-day conflict. Participation on this day aims to channel empathy toward the innocent civilians, families, and children who have tragically lost their lives in the ongoing conflict. Fasting symbolizes Muslim commitment to stand with those who suffer, even when we can't fully comprehend the depth of their pain.
The staggering number of casualties currently stands at over 3,785 Palestinian lives killed by Israeli military attacks on Gaza since October 7th, and over 1,300 Israelis killed. Across the West Bank and Jerusalem, at least 76 Palestinians have been killed, including eight by armed settlers. Over one million Palestinians, approximately half of Gaza's inhabitants, have sought refuge by vacating their homes in the northern regions and Gaza City, responding to evacuation directives from Israel. Early on Thursday, aerial bombardments persisted, spanning the entire territory, even impacting areas in the southern region designated as "safe zones" by Israel.
“In the midst of ongoing war crimes and suffering in Gaza, West Bank and Jerusalem, today’s day of fasting is significant because global Muslims are hurting for their Palestinian sisters and brothers facing disproportionate aggression. While the world watches the situation with horror, diverse Canadians from all different backgrounds have come together to fast,” said Taha Ghayyur, Executive Director of Justice For All Canada.
Those who participated in the fast were encouraged to share their experience on social media using hashtags #fastforpalestine, #prayforpalestine, and #duaforpalestine.
The Occupation of Palestine
For 75 years, the Israeli occupation and apartheid of Palestine have cast a long shadow of human rights abuses, displacements, and suffering. From the displacement of Palestinian communities to the construction of illegal settlements, Palestinian civilians feel the implications of this occupation daily. The current violence highlights the importance of addressing the underlying issues, respecting international law, and committing to a peaceful resolution that upholds the rights and dignity of all those affected.
