Canadian Muslim Groups Launch Indigenous Education Program for Youth
September 28th, 2021
Justice For All Canada, KAICIID International Fellows Programme, and Zulfaa Foundation, are excited to announce the launch of Muslim-Indigenous Connection: a unique learning initiative for students 13 to 20.
Launching in commemoration with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th, the Muslim-Indigenous Connection will engage Canadian Muslim youth cohorts in cultivating and preserving inclusion and connectedness with First Nation culture and knowledge. The three-month-long initiative will help participants to reflect on the atrocities Canada committed against Indigenous Peoples, while encouraging constructive dialogue on healing and reconciliation.
Students will take part in training sessions, panel discussions and engagement sessions with Indigenous elders and Muslim leaders. The program concludes with a site visit to a First Nations community and a cultural centre, where participants will grasp both the past and present realities of a historic former residential school.
“Between October and December, Muslim-Indigenous Connection aims to attract a wide cross-section of Canadian Muslim students to study Indigenous history and values,” explained Sakina Ghayyur, a Youth Lead of the program.
“Learning objectives of the multi-phase program aims to increase appreciation of the lived experiences of Indigenous Peoples, with a commitment to fostering an environment of understanding and trust among all communities,” shared Nadwa Elbadri, a Youth Lead of the Muslim-Indigenous Connection.
The Muslim-Indigenous Connection seeks to fill a critical gap in engagement and allyship between Canadian Muslim and Indigenous groups across Canada. Applicants can register until October 4th using the link www.MuslimIndigenous.com.
