Montreal and Markham Islamophobia: Recognizing the Threat and Addressing Its Impact on Canadian Muslims
April 11th, 2023
Justice For All Canada is deeply concerned about the recent string of hate crimes targeted at Canadian Muslim communities in Ontario and Quebec. In the strongest terms, we condemn the recent incidents at the Islamic Society of Markham and the Al Omah Mosque in Montreal.
It is unacceptable that Muslim worshippers were targeted and threatened during a time of prayer, no less in the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Such despicable actions violate the fundamental human rights of Muslims and threaten the security of places of worship. We urge police to investigate these incidents as hate crimes and take swift action to hold those responsible accountable to the greatest extent of the law.
“The urgency of addressing Islamophobia cannot be overstated. The shocking hate crimes in Markham and Montreal cities could have ended in another tragedy, God forbid. Islamophobia causes harm to not only the individuals targeted but also the broader society by fostering division and hatred. This does not belong in Canada,” said Taha Ghayyur, Executive Director of Justice For All Canada.
We call on the Canadian government to play a more substantial role in ending all forms of bigotry, racism, and discrimination, particularly demonstrable efforts to protect Muslims from hate crimes. This must begin by first acknowledging Islamophobia as a significant threat to global Muslim minorities experiencing state-sponsored Islamophobia.
Connecting Global and Domestic Islamophobia in Canada
From hate crimes to discriminatory policies and media representations, Muslims are increasingly targeted and marginalized on a global scale. Today, Muslim populations in major states also experience human rights violations, including the threat of genocide under nationalist governments, such as in China and India.
This unsettling global trend is closely connected to the rise of Islamophobia in Canada, where Muslim communities face increasingly similar challenges and risks to their lives.
The stigmatization and demonization of Muslims in one context have begun fueling a vicious cycle of intolerance in Canada. We must recognize the interconnectedness of global and domestic Islamophobia and work together to combat this dangerous phenomenon.
Justice For All Canada stands in solidarity with Muslim communities impacted by the latest concerning events in Markham and Montreal.
