Immediate Action Needed to Oppose Israeli Violence Against Palestinian Worshippers at Al-Aqsa
April 5th, 2023
STATEMENT—This week’s violent attacks against Palestinian worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Occupied East Jerusalem, committed by Apartheid Israeli forces, are a gross violation of human rights and international law. The mosque is one of the holiest sites in Islam, and these attacks during the holy month of Ramadan are reprehensible.
“We stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and call for an end to the violence against them. The violent raids by Apartheid Israeli forces on Palestinian worshippers in Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan are unsettling. These attacks arrive after right-wing Israeli leaders committed shocking hate speech against Palestinians. Canada’s dismal and prejudiced response to this atrocity is contrary to our so-called commitment to international human rights,” said Taha Ghayyur, Executive Director of Justice For All Canada
Viral video footage show Israeli soldiers using excessive force to remove worshippers from the mosque, including beating them with batons and rifle butts. Hundreds of Palestinians were detained after spending the night worshipping in the mosque. Many of these worshippers were participating in the act of i'tikaf, a form of prayer and contemplation during Ramadan.
This is not an isolated incident, but part of a larger pattern of Israeli violence against Palestinian civilians. Furthermore, Canada's arms exports to Israel are at the highest level in over three decades, despite evidence that these exports have facilitated violations of the human rights of Palestinians.
Canadians nationwide have decried the crises and condemned a weak response tweeted by Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly.

- Justice For All Canada joins civil society and human rights organizations in urging the Canadian government to condemn and take action against Israel’s indiscriminate violence towards Palestinian worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque.
- We call on Prime Minister Trudeau, UN representative Bob Rae, and government leaders to speak out and take concrete steps to stop the violence and hold Israel accountable.
- We urge Canada to end its complicity by stopping all arms exports to Israel, ensuring that past sales have not made us complicit in Israeli violence. We cannot remain complacent in the face of ongoing abuses by the Israeli government against Palestinians.
