Condemning Settler-Initiated Violence in the Occupied West Bank City of Huwara
February 28th, 2023
Justice for All Canada strongly condemns recent Israeli settler-initiated violence in the occupied West Bank’s Huwara city, including Zaatara, Burin, and Asira al-Qibliya.
The deadly and destructive rampage was committed by an organized force of 400 vigilante Israeli settlers, resulting in the loss of 1 Palestinian life and over 100 civilian injuries. Approximately 75 homes and 100 vehicles were demolished and burned. The reprehensible aggression has traumatized and left the Palestinian community struggling to rebuild.
“We’re deeply troubled by the rising levels of violence in the West Bank, including the Israeli military raid on Nablus city on February 22nd, which has led to the deaths of at least 61 Palestinians since the beginning of the year,” said Taha Ghayyur, Executive Director.
Such actions were announced as a "pogrom," despite Israeli forces allowing settlers to enter the city, refusing to intervene until hours after the violence erupted. According to witnesses, Israeli forces participated in the attacks by protecting settlers.
The re-election of a far-right Israeli government has escalated anti-Palestinian confrontations and resistance. Following the Huwara incidents, several Israeli officials have also used their platforms to incite mass violence and genocide against Palestinians in Huwara, calling for the “burning of villages” and for the city to be “wiped out.”
To prevent the escalation of further violence, it’s necessary for democratic nations such as Canada and its allies to uphold protecting vulnerable Palestinian populations under international law.
According to the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem, Israeli policy is set up to “aid and abet” anti-Palestinian violence. B’Tselem also reported that the Israeli state “supports and assists” settler violence against Palestinians.
Prompt action from the Canadian government is required to prevent the Israeli government from enabling further settler-initiated violence and atrocities against unarmed Palestinians.
We also call on global institutions, including the United Nations, to take immediate action to ensure that Israeli perpetrators of this violence are held accountable for their actions and assist the affected Palestinian communities.
