G7's Disproportionate Response to Gaza and Uyghur Genocides Compared to Ukraine
June 21, 2024
Justice For All Canada expresses deep disappointment with the recent G7 Summit's handling of the extensive human rights abuses in Gaza and East Turkestan by the Israeli and Chinese governments. The G7 Leaders’ Joint Statement falls short of addressing the UN-documented atrocities and violations of international law, revealing a stark imbalance when compared to the robust support and concrete measures extended to Ukraine.
The G7 leaders' statement on Gaza initially called for a ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid, yet failed to hold Israel accountable for its continued military aggression, indiscriminate civilian bombardment, and illegal blockade. The lack of explicit condemnation of these actions from G7 leadership, including from Prime Minister Trudeau, gives tacit support for significant civilian killings and infrastructure destruction. Following the conclusion of the G7, its narrative remains skewed towards Israel’s security without equally emphasizing the urgent need to protect Palestinian lives and uphold their rights. In stark contrast, the G7 demonstrated strong, concrete, and unequivocal support for Ukraine, including substantial financial commitments and detailed plans for reconstruction and security cooperation.
“This disparity displayed by this year’s G7 summit demonstrates a selective approach to human rights and international law application. Leadership inaction towards ongoing genocides in Occupied Palestine and East Turkestan sorely diminishes the credibility of the G7's supposed commitment to global justice and peace,” said Taha Ghayyur, Executive Director of Justice For All Canada.
Regarding Uyghur Muslims in East Turkestan, the simple and brief expression of concern over human rights abuses, including forced labour, is insufficient. There was no decisive action plan or robust international mechanism proposed to hold China accountable for its systematic oppression of Uyghurs—a major missed opportunity to genuinely confront what the United Nations has identified as crimes against humanity.
Using their country’s foreign policies, Justice For All Canada urges G7 leaders and the Canadian government to adopt stronger, more comprehensive measures addressing the root causes of these crises. For Gaza, this means unequivocal condemnation of Israel’s illegal blockade and military actions, and a push for accountability through international legal mechanisms. For Uyghurs, it requires a coordinated global effort to end the atrocities, including economic sanctions and greater support for international investigations.
We call on Canada and other G7 nations to lead by example, ensuring that future policies and statements reflect effective condemnation and concrete multilateral actions for all vulnerable populations under persecution.
