Justice For All Canada calls on the Canadian government to unequivocally condemn the Israeli government for allowing police to assault pallbearers and mourners gathered at the funeral processions of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. In a shocking scene, Israeli police forces pushed mourners causing them to drop her casket--an outrageous moment that added to the grief and helplessness felt by Palestinians across Jerusalem.
Now documented in a viral video, Israeli police moved in on Palestinian crowds, beating, clubbing, and pushing those gathered for the funeral. Israeli police also ripped away Palestinian flags and fired stun grenades into crowds.
Since the brutal execution-style killing of Akleh by Israeli troops last week, Canada’s Foreign Ministry has mostly remained silent over the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian journalist’s killing. Justice For All Canada has called on Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly to categorically condemn the Israeli government as complicit in the senseless killing of Akleh.
So far, Minister Joly’s tweets on this crime against humanity have not named Israeli government forces as the perpetrator of Akleh’s murder. Moreover, a recent statement released by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Israel Independence Day equates criticism of the Israeli government with antisemitism. “The Liberal government’s refusal to acknowledge vulnerable Palestinian communities contradicts Canada’s ongoing commitments to global human rights. It highlights tacit discrimination against Palestinians. Just in April, Palestinian Muslims and Christians experienced daily raids, desecrated places of worship, and attacks on unarmed civilians,” commented Executive Director Taha Ghayyur.
Human rights defenders across Canada call on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly to condemn the Israeli government’s apartheid rule of Palestinians, including illegal crimes documented by Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International:
It’s time for the Canadian government to demand accountability for grave abuses in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, instead of treating these issues as mere indicators of “lack of peace progress.”

Human rights defenders across Canada call on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly to condemn the Israeli government’s apartheid rule of Palestinians, including illegal crimes documented by Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International:
- Draconian military rule over Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, while Israeli settlers live in the same territory under protections of Israeli civil law
- Widespread restrictions on the movement of Palestinians
- Discriminatory home demolitions and mass suspension of civil rights
- Mass land confiscation
It’s time for the Canadian government to demand accountability for grave abuses in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, instead of treating these issues as mere indicators of “lack of peace progress.”
