A total of 9 Members of Parliament presented petitions they sponsored that advocated against the ethnic cleansing of Uyghur ethnic minorities.
October 2020
The Parliamentary Subcommittee on International Human Rights urged the Canadian Government to intervene in the ongoing Uyghur Genocide. The subcommittee released a list of actionable humanitarian demands and imposition of sanctions on Chinese Communist officials responsible for the crimes against humanity against Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang.
January 2021
Global Affairs Canada announced new business regulations curbing Canadian companies from being complicit in human rights abuses by using forced labour in Xinjiang. These requirements also forbid companies from exporting products that could be used by Chinese authorities for arbitrary detention, repression or surveillance of Uyghurs
February 2021
Canadian parliament unanimously voted to declare China’s treatment of Uyghurs and Turkic Muslim populations as genocide. This move made Canada the 2nd country to declare China’s crimes against humanity a genocide, after the United States.
March 2021
Canada joined the United States and United Nations in sanctioning 4 high-ranking Chinese officials directly involved in the years-long persecution campaign against Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang.
