Law as an Instrument of Oppression: Unlawful Activities Prevention Act 2024
The Indian government has been using a law called the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) to arrest individuals without trial or sufficient evidence of a crime and detain them for months. In Kashmir, nearly half of the individuals detained under the UAPA are still languishing in jail for no justifiable reason. Using 7 case studies, this report focuses on how the UAPA is weaponized to restrain journalists and designed as a tool to suppress Kashmiri civil and Human Rights. According to Amnesty International and the United Nations, the UAPA does not fulfill international human rights standards.
