Job Description
The full-time Advocacy Officer will use their experience in policy advocacy and lobbying to oversee and implement effective government relations, advocacy strategies and community outreach efforts in Ottawa. A commitment to collaborative planning, problem-solving, and quality communications with stakeholders is critical.
Responsibilities
1. Government Relations and Lobbying:
- Serve as the government relations contact for JFA Canada at Parliament Hill
- Conduct outreach to and schedule meetings with legislative staff and offices of MPs, Ministers & Senators in Ottawa
- Establish working relationship with Global Affairs Canada and parliamentary committees on human rights, foreign affairs, and international development to engage and build support for campaign-related human rights actions and objectives
- Represent JFA Canada at parliamentary events and committee meetings & hearings
- Organize lobby days and press conferences on Parliament Hill for specific campaigns
- Work with the Advocacy Programs Manager to develop an action plan for lobbying at Parliament Hill for each campaign
- Work with the Advocacy Programs Manager and the Policy Team to research and develop policy briefs for submission to government agencies, as assigned
- Disseminate statements, reports, op-eds, briefs and policy documents to GAC, MPs, and Senators regularly
2. Community Outreach:
- Develop strong relationships with Masjids, community organizations, NGOs, and civil society groups in the Ottawa-Gatineau area
- Set up and manage a table at Masjids on Fridays and community events to promote Justice for All Canada campaigns and email sign-ups
- Organize awareness events and leadership briefings in Ottawa
- Recruit and manage outreach volunteer teams in the city
- Update the database of email subscribers regularly and submit to the marketing department
- Assist with local fundraising efforts as needed
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Project Management, Public Policy, Development Studies, or a combination of equivalent or related education is an asset.
Experience and Skills
- Effective research, written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal, public-speaking skills with demonstrated leadership experience
- Experience in planning, managing, and implementing advocacy projects
- Experience building partnerships, coalitions, allies or networks
- Government relations experience in a not-for-profit organization
- Demonstrated familiarity with structure and functions of the Canadian Federal government and foreign policy
- Capacity to effectively work under pressure independently and with a team
- Computer proficiency (Microsoft Office, Google Drive and project management systems)
- Operational knowledge of social media and web-related technologies
- Professional demeanour
- Flexibility to work on weekends and weekday evenings as required
- Flexibility to travel for work as required
