Message from Justice For All Canada on National Indigenous Peoples Day
21 June 2024
On National Indigenous Peoples Day, Justice For All Canada acknowledges the profound contributions made by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities on the identity and culture of Canada. We recognize this important day because it signifies the strength and resilience of the Indigenous Peoples, and their unbreakable connection to this land that is now called Canada.
As we celebrate the rich traditions and diverse cultures that Indigenous peoples have preserved for many years, we affirm that this recognition is only one step toward genuine reconciliation and justice. This walk requires a steadfast commitment toward addressing past and ongoing injustices that have been committed against Indigenous peoples. In Canada, the devastating impact of the residential school system, officially recognized as genocide by the Canadian government, is a dark chapter in our history that demands continuous reflection and action. The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) provides a vital framework for this needed reconciliation, advocating for Indigenous Peoples' rights to self-determination, land, and governance. The recently tabled National Action Plan marks a significant step forward, but it also demonstrates our collective substantial work ahead to realize and implement these rights fully.
Justice For All Canada stands in solidarity with Indigenous communities, pledges to put UNDRIP to action in Canada, and understands the imperative need to pursue Indigenous rights. This commitment is part of our broader mandate to combat genocide and oppression globally. As we reflect on the atrocities committed against Indigenous Peoples in Canada, we are reminded of the imperative to advocate for the rights and dignity of all minority groups worldwide suffering similar plights, including Uyghurs, Kashmiris, Palestinians, Rohingya, and religious and Indigenous minorities in India. In this regard, Canada must lead by example, ensuring principles of justice, fairness, and reconciliation are upheld in all corners of the world as well as here at home.
We call on all Canadians to engage meaningfully with the truths of our shared history and to support initiatives that will bring about genuine reconciliation for Indigenous communities. This includes participation in local events, educational activities, and community discussions fostering understanding and respect.
Let this National Indigenous Peoples Day across Canada strengthen our resolve for justice and reconciliation. In doing so, we can start repairing past wrongs and enter into a future where all Indigenous communities are valued, respected, and protected.
